Local SEO
AI Overviews and zero click search changed how people find local businesses. Here is what still works in 2026, and what actually moved.

Yes, for a local business, SEO is still worth paying for in 2026, but the reason has changed. People used to find you by clicking the top result on Google. Now they find you when Google's AI answer names your business, when the map pack shows your profile, or when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation and your name comes back. All three of those depend on the same fundamentals SEO has always covered. Skip that work and you disappear from the exact places buyers now look first.
Here is what actually moved, and why it works in your favor if you get it right.
Google now answers a lot of questions on the results page itself. By early 2026, about 68 percent of US Google searches ended without a click to any website, according to a Search Engine Land study. AI Overviews, the AI summary at the top of many searches, show up on more than a fifth of queries and keep expanding.

When that summary appears, it pulls traffic away from the links below it. An Ahrefs study comparing March 2024 and March 2025 data found click through rates dropped 34.5 percent on searches with an AI Overview, a decline that has held since AI Overviews launched. Seer Interactive's 2026 update shows where the opportunity now sits: pages that are cited inside an AI Overview earn roughly 35 percent higher organic click through than pages that rank on the same results page without a citation, about 2.1 percent versus 0.9 percent. That finding came from 53 brands and 5.47 million queries measured from January 2025 to February 2026.
Read quickly, that sounds like bad news for SEO. It is not. It is a shift in what SEO produces. The goal used to be a number one ranking. The goal now is being the business the answer is built from. Google's AI Overview cites specific pages. Get cited and you still get found, often by someone further along in deciding.
National companies are fighting each other for a mention in a general AI answer. A local HVAC company or accounting firm is competing in a much smaller pool: businesses that actually serve your town, for a search with clear local intent. That is a winnable fight.
The AI answers and the map pack both lean heavily on structured local signals. A complete, accurate Google Business Profile is the biggest one. Businesses with fully filled out profiles get roughly 70 percent more location visits than those with thin or incomplete profiles, per BrightLocal. Categories, service list, hours, service area, photos, and a steady stream of recent reviews all feed what the systems know about you.
Your website still matters too, because it is where the specifics live. Clear service pages, real answers to the questions customers ask, and location detail give both Google and the AI tools something concrete to pull from. A vague site gives them nothing to work with.
For "plumber near me" or "accountant in Stamford," the three businesses in the map pack get the bulk of the attention. That has not changed with AI in the picture. Someone with a burst pipe is not reading a 2,000 word article. They are looking at the top three profiles, the star ratings, and the phone numbers.
Ranking in that pack comes down to profile completeness, proximity, review volume and recency, and consistent business information across the web. Every one of those is local SEO work. None of it happens on its own.
Reviews were always a trust signal for the person reading them. In 2026 they also shape whether AI tools recommend you at all. The BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found 45 percent of consumers now use AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode to find local businesses, up from 6 percent a year earlier. Those tools read the same review content your customers do. A business with 90 recent reviews at 4.9 stars gives the AI a clear reason to name it. A business with 11 old reviews does not.
The same survey found 89 percent of consumers expect owners to respond to reviews. Responding is free and it feeds the machine at the same time.
Short version. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and current. Get reviews consistently and respond to all of them. Make sure your name, address, and phone match everywhere they appear online. Have real pages on your site for each core service and each area you cover, written to answer actual customer questions. Keep publishing content that reflects the work you do.
None of that is exotic. It is the same foundation local SEO has always been. The payoff is just showing up in more places now: the map pack, the AI answer, and the chat recommendation, not only the list of blue links.
